Dogs and humans are two different species that have developed chemistry through the years. When you go out, it’s normal for you to see a human and a dog spending time with each other, having fun. Through the ages, humans and dogs created a special link together, a link that exhibits companionship, loyalty, selflessness, friendship, and unconditional love.
Hence, we will always hear about heroic dogs rescuing their human masters. We will never be tired of readings stories and posts about “My dog saved my life”, “military dog stories”, “faithful dog stories”, “dog protects owner” and “animal hero stories”. We will always have a soft spot on this kind of stories. They warm our hearts.
Thus, here are 5 true stories of heroic dogs in history:
It’s all about saving lives.
On Tuesday of September 19, 2017, a tremendous 7.1 magnitude earthquake shocked the center of Mexico. After three days, rescue worker started checking out for survivors and with them is the Labrador named Frida.
Frida is a 7-year-old rescue dog who works on the Mexican Navy’s Canine Unit. Her job is to sniff out people who may be trapped due to natural disasters. As a rescuer, Frida wears goggles, booties and a harness to keep her from debris. The heroic dog detected 52 people throughout her career, 12 of whom were found alive.
Frida the rescue dog became a social media sensation and was featured in a lot of websites and social media posts. She became a symbol of hope. A true hero who is devoted on saving lives.
A dog will keep you safe.
On February 2018, a 16-year-old named Javier Cadena was home alone when burglars smashed through the glass door. The scared Javier hid in a bathroom closet and his German shepherd dog named Rex went down stairs to scare off the intruders.
The brave dog was able to bite one of the burglars but the men beat him up. Still and all, the heroic Rex was able to continue attacking the burglars. Until then, the two men shot poor Rex three times. Shortly after, the police men arrived at Javier’s house causing the burglars to flee the house.
Heroic Rex was rushed to the hospital immediately. Surprisingly, the dog was able to recover. While recovering, Rex received two awards: the PETA’s Heroic dog award and The German Shepherd Dog Club of America’s Hero of the year award.
Fighting for the love of service.
Chips was one of the 11,000 dogs trained for guard and patrol duty for United States Army during World War II. Chips was a strong and smart Shepherd-Collie-Siberian husky mix dog.
In July 10, 1943, during the invasion of Sicily, Italian soldiers pinned down the U.S. forces on a beach in Sicily. Chips ran to the enemy’s hut to watch over. Suddenly, a shot rang out. Moments later, a soldier appeared with an injured Chips.
After having a scalp wound and powder burns to his mouth and left eye, Chips was still determined to fight the soldiers. He detected 10 enemy soldiers who were captured that day.
Chips became the only animal to be awarded the Silver Star in 1943. He was also awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart award.
In 1990, a TV movie by Disney entitled “Chips, the War Dog” was made to bring his story to life. Heroic dog Chips was also awarded the Dickin Medal 75 years after saving the lives of U.S. soldiers.
A dog will fight for you.
Pete became a social media sensation after his owner posted his story of bravery. While Pete, his master and other dogs was out on a hike in New York they encountered a black bear. Pete fought the bear off letting his owner get away with the other dogs. When his master assured the safety of the other dogs he went back for the brave Pete, but Pete was greatly injured. His master brought him immediately to the hospital. Pete was so strong. He made sure his master wouldn’t worry. The x-rays of Pete revealed a bad spinal damage, Pete cannot walk again. Doing a surgery also doesn’t assure Pete’s survival. The family decided to let him go. Making him let go of all the aches and pains of old age.
After Pete’s owner tweeted his brave story, people started to give tributes and posted well wishes to acknowledge his sacrifice and bravery.
Pete was a brave senior dog. His courage and heroic action will never be forgotten.
A dog with a very big heart.
In February 2012, a mixed-breed dog named Kabang threw herself in front of a speeding motorcycle that was about to hit two little girls. The girls and the motorcycle driver were shaken but unhurt. However, Kabang’s snout was caught in the spokes. It was ripped off.
Apparently, the two girls were the daughter and the niece of Kabang’s master. Rudy, his master expressed his honor and gratitude to Kabang and his bravery.
The story of Kabang saving the two girls became a local legend in the Philippines. His story attracted worldwide support. Veterinarians and humanitarian groups raised money that brought Kabang and her owner to the U.S. for surgery. Kabang returned home in the Philippines 8 months after her surgery in the United States.

These brave dog stories capture the love and affection of dogs on humans. The truth is, dogs will always love and protect the ones they love. They have great hearts, maybe, greater than the ones we have. Hence, they may be better than the people we call our “best friends”. Who would want to offer his life saving yours?
